Commercial music, also known as pop music, is the name of a musical genre, and “popular” is a very important feature of it. Its characteristic is that pop music has been mainly produced in the city, created by professional musicians, and often spread through word of mouth. Since 1950, this term specifically refers to non-classical forms of songs, such as the music performed by Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elba and so on. The United States is the political, economic and cultural exchanging center of the world. It has played a dominant role in the birth and development of pop music. From blues and jazz to rock music, pop music has made great contributions, leading the pop musicians all over the world to create excellent musical works continuously to enrich people’s cultural life. Therefore, commercial music has a vital role in society for its important social functions.
First of all, popular music can enhance people's spiritual pursuit. The moral spirit, emotions and lovecontained in the music can be accepted by people and gradually transformed into part of their spiritual pursuits, that unconsciously influences the audience in the spread process. For example, in the 1980s, outstanding pop musicians such as Michael Jackson and Madonna had emerged. They not only achieved outstanding business success but also made excellent musical attainments, completely changing the popular music. Michael Jackson was passionate about charity and called for world peace and ethnic solidarity. Madonna's feminist and sexual liberation opinions had tremendous impacts on today's popular music themes and global pop culture. Their music has had a very positive effect on the people's thinking and spiritual emancipation. Simon Frith pointed out that pop music is something possessed, that people make it part of their own identity and build it into their sense of themselves (Frith, 1987, pp.133-149). While being exposed to popular music, people can feel their positive connotations, and thus have been spiritually improved and internalized as part of their personality.
In addition, pop music greatly promoted the development of music economy. Nowadays, the world is full of pop music, pop music is spread wherever there is a loudspeaker. As an audience, in the process of listening to music, the enthusiasm for music and learning it are also stimulated. For example, the booming development of China's karaoke industry, people’s learning of electric pianos, guitars, electric guitars, electric bass, saxophone and other modern musical instruments to make up for the lack of musical quality of art, have improved individual music training, thus promoting the development of music industry. At the same time, many albums ofpop stars and their concerts can effectively stimulate the consumer's attention and purchase, driving economic growth, promoting the development of the tertiary industry and thus stimulating the development of the national economy (Zhang, 2017, pp.494-498).
Finally, pop music helps the formation of national civilization. In a certain sense, it can be considered that the influence of popular music on people also shapes the quality and civilization of contemporary people. Different ethnic cultures contain different pop music culture. For example, early pop music was a new form of culture derived from the working class and the lower middle class. In order to survive, black people had to choose to work at Europe and the United States or other places. The pop music at early time was to express their love and nostalgia for their hometown. And there are many kinds of pop music that express the spirit and civilization of different nationalities and are imbued with the unique characteristics of each ethnic group. For example, jazz incorporates the musical composition of some whites. Rap music reflects the urban black’s distinct experience, gradually forming a kind of music style (Berry, 1994, pp.165-187).Latin music is more like a multi-ethnic collection, which is a diversified mixed-type music formed by the integration of a variety of music.
Music has no boundaries and no discrimination. It is a product of the time and a product of history. It is also a great manifestation of the progress of human civilization and plays an important role in the development of society, because it fulfills important social functions.
